The Science and Mathematics Program (SMP) in the Learning and Teaching Division (LTD) at Education Devleopment Center (EDC) in Waltham, Massachusetts has a part-time opening for a Research Assistant (I), reporting to the principal invesgiator in Northfield, Minnesota. This is a 50% position. Education Development Center, Inc. (www.edc.org) is an international, non-profit organization with 1,700 staff (half in the United States and half overseas) dedicated to enhancing learning and promoting health and economic opportunity. EDC, in partnership with Boston University and St. Olaf College, is leading a four-year study to develop research instruments to assess grade 7-12 teachers’ mathematical habits of mind (MHoM), or the ways of thinking that are central to the work of mathematicians. The project, called Assessing Secondary Teachers' Algebraic Habits of Mind, aims to gain insight into the ways in which teachers think mathematically and to explore the relationship between teachers’ engagement with MHoM, their use of these habits in teaching, and student achievement. The Research Assistant (I) will play an important role in the collection, management, and analaysis of data for the project. The Research Assistant will collaborate with the research team to recruit school sites and teachers for pilot and large-scale studies, administer assessments and online surveys, coordinate and conduct classroom observations. Responsibilities will include creating and maintaining databases, entering and coding data, and tracking research activities. The preferred candidate will have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work on multiple tasks. Experience with data management and interest in K-12 education are preferable. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and funders; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures. Under management oversight, the Research Assistant (I) provides support to qualitative &/or quantitative investigation efforts, including: • research & analysis • drafting • documenting & cataloguing • maintaining records • preparing preliminary recommendations • disseminating information • supporting development and proposal work The Research Assistant (I) • Leads assigned administrative tasks • Facilitates project teamwork; seeks and utilizes feedback • Assists with quality assurance • Provides logistical support • May travel frequently QUALIFICATIONS This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills.
