The Harvard Management Company s real estate portfolio is composed of a diversified group of investments in limited partnerships in real estate draw-down funds, along with an active portfolio of direct real estate investments. The portfolio is comprised of underlying exposures on a global basis. The Senior Real Estate Accountant will be responsible for the accounting and reporting functions of the real estate portfolio. This includes the review and processing of daily trade activity, oversight of cash movements, review of monthly property accounting packages from subsidiary joint ventures, and direct exposure to the valuation process for the entire real estate asset class. This also includes the reconciliation of trade entry, accounting, and performance systems to ensure trade execution accuracy and proper recording of all transactions. The Senior Accountant will work closely with the Assistant Portfolio Controller to execute the accounting period close of the real estate portfolio on a monthly basis, with additional emphasis on the quarterly and annual valuation cycle of the underlying investments. This process requires in-depth analysis and understanding of the real estate portfolio investments, including the documentation of significant matters on an ongoing basis. An important component of this process is the continuous communication and support of the Company s investment professional s needs for relevant and timely financial information. The Senior Accountant will be a point person for the accounting staff of our underlying JV partner s accounting teams, and will collaborate with these teams in ensuring the books and records of our underlying ventures are accurately reported to the Management Company. RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintain the integrity of portfolio accounting systems and general ledger records Ensure proper reconciliation of trade entry, accounting, and performance reporting systems Execute cash movements in coordination with custody operations personnel and ensure trades are processed accurately and timely Research and resolve cash /valuation discrepancies and review reconciliation reports daily Facilitate communication with external fund managers and JV operators to obtain relevant accounting detail and insight into the accounting and valuation process on a continuous basis Obtain and review L.P. financial statements and assist in the analysis of these statements, with emphasis at year-end Analyze and research current industry and accounting guidance and its applicability to the real estate portfolio and the accounting and reporting process Compile periodic financial reports for management review including ad hoc requests throughout the year Interact with and support the real estate portfolio managers regarding portfolio investments and related issues Assist during the annual audit, providing information as requested and maintaining audit reports throughout the year Participate in special projects and duties as assigned, including support of the Company s operational due diligence process QUALIFICATIONS: BS Accounting (CPA preferred) Minimum 5 years of relevant accounting experience within the real estate industry (preferably some Big 4 public accounting experience, plus experience working at a real estate investment manager) Ideal candidate will be very proficient with real estate investment accounting/industry issues, with a firm understanding of real estate valuation, portfolio operations, and financial reporting matters General understanding of the tax aspects of private and alternative investments Knowledge and demonstrated interest of financial markets and products Excellent communication skills; confidence and ability to communicate with all levels of management Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines Must be extremely detail oriented and demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and self motivation
